Episode 54 When a community experiences a crisis such as a mass shooting, hurricane or terrorism, well-intentioned “outsiders” often come in and try to help. But as our guest Rev. Dr. Willard Ashley, Sr. points out, it’s important to learn the language and understand the culture of the impacted community before attempting to meet its specific needs. In this episode, you’ll learn how psychotherapy can help a faith-based community heal from trauma. Dr. Ashley did ground-breaking work helping clergy recognize and address their own emotional trauma and distress as first responders after 9/11. His interfaith program ' Care for the Caregivers' has become a model, and Will an expert, in how to shape religious communities' role in disaster relief around the world. Psychotherapy looks deep inside of your emotions, your psyche and your spirituality. Cognitive behavior therapy and psychoanalysis can help you find resistances that cause the inner conflict that pushes you to behave in a manner that contradicts your true values. This episode of Living the Front Seat Life Podcast is sponsored by BIPOC PEEEEEEK Breaking the Stigma & Silence and Prioritizing Needs. BIPOC PEEEEEEK is hosting the Mental Health in Communities of Color conference on July 13th, 14th and 16th in Rochester, Buffalo and Syracuse NY respectively. Register for this incredible conference at www.bipocparentvoice.org. The Symposiums brings together local leaders, regional and national experts (including Dr Ashley), community members, behavioral health providers and stakeholders for a half-day of learning dedicated to addressing mental health and trauma through the lens of equity. The goal is to engage in dialogue to highlight the diversity of needs for both youth and adults across systems and collectively work together to identify strategies to improve care for children and families from diverse backgrounds. The Buffalo event date of July 14th happens to fall on the 60 day mark of the Tops Market massacre and organizers will discuss strategies for long-term plans to address trauma and system level changes.
